Pitch Speed Converter: MPH to km/h

Type a pitch speed in any unit and the other three fill in: miles per hour, kilometers per hour, meters per second and feet per second. Handy when a radar gun, a broadcast or a scouting report uses a different unit than you do.

Most U.S. radar guns read in mph, while many countries, including Japan and Korea, show pitch speed in km/h. This converts either way.

Common pitch speeds (mph):

Result

96.6 km/h

60 mph = 96.6 km/h = 26.82 m/s = 88 ft/s

Time to the plate at this speedSeconds
60 ft 6 in mound (55 ft release to plate)0.625 s
46 ft Little League mound (41 ft release to plate)0.466 s

Times assume the ball holds this speed the whole way and is let go about 5 ft in front of the rubber. Real pitches slow down a little, so treat them as estimates.

The formulas

All four units are tied together by exact factors from NIST's conversion tables:

  • km/h = mph × 1.609344, and mph = km/h ÷ 1.609344
  • m/s = mph × 0.44704, and m/s = km/h ÷ 3.6
  • ft/s = mph × 22/15 (about 1.4667), since a mile is 5,280 ft and an hour is 3,600 s

Hand check: 90 mph × 1.609344 = 144.84 km/h. 90 × 0.44704 = 40.23 m/s. 90 × 22 ÷ 15 = 132 ft/s.

Time to the plate

The converter also shows how long a pitch takes to reach the plate at that speed. It divides the release-to-plate distance by the speed in ft/s, assuming the pitcher lets go about 5 ft in front of the rubber: 55 ft on a 60 ft 6 in mound and 41 ft on a 46 ft Little League mound. A real pitch loses some speed on the way, so the true time is a little longer.

To compare a Little League speed with a big-field speed by reaction time, use the pitch speed equivalent calculator, which lets you set the mound distance and release point.

A conversion is only as good as the reading. Radar guns measure at different points in the pitch's flight, so two guns can show different numbers for the same throw. See how to measure pitch speed and our radar gun guide for getting a reading you can trust.

FAQ

How do you convert mph to km/h?

Multiply the speed in mph by 1.609344. A 60 mph pitch is 96.6 km/h, and a 90 mph pitch is 144.8 km/h. To go the other way, divide km/h by 1.609344.

What is 100 mph in km/h?

100 mph is 160.9 km/h (160.9344 exactly), which is 44.7 m/s or 146.7 ft/s.

What is 150 km/h in mph?

150 km/h is about 93.2 mph.

How do you convert mph to feet per second?

Multiply by 22/15, about 1.4667. A mile is 5,280 feet and an hour is 3,600 seconds, so 60 mph is exactly 88 ft/s.

Are the conversion factors exact?

Yes. 1 mph is exactly 1.609344 km/h and exactly 0.44704 m/s, per NIST's conversion tables. The converter shows rounded results.

Can I put this converter on my site?
