How Little League age works

Little League doesn't use a player's age on opening day. It uses a fixed cut-off date, so a player keeps the same "league age" all season. The official rule is:

  • Baseball: the player's age on August 31 of the season year. For 2027, that's August 31, 2027.
  • Softball: the player's age on December 31 of the year before. For 2027, that's December 31, 2026.

So for baseball, players born from September 1 of one year through August 31 of the next share a league age. For softball, everyone born in the same calendar year does.

Divisions by league age

These are Little League's official age limits. Players outside them aren't eligible for that division.

Division Baseball Softball
Tee Ball 4–7 4–7
Minor League 7–12 (5–6 coach or machine pitch, after one season of Tee Ball) 7–12 (5–6 coach or machine pitch, after one season of Tee Ball)
Little League (Majors) 9–12 9–12
Intermediate (50/70) 11–13 Not offered
Junior League 12–14 12–14
Senior League 13–16 13–16

Your local league's board can set its own cut-offs inside these ranges, for example Majors for league age 10–12 or 11–12 only. A player who fits two divisions plays where the league places them. Little League also runs a Challenger Division for players with physical and intellectual challenges, generally league age 4–18.

Pitch count limits by league age

Pitch count limits in Little League baseball depend on league age. These are the regular season daily maximums from Little League's pitching rules:

League age Max pitches per day
6–8 50
9–10 75
11–12 85
13–16 95

The rules also set rest days by pitch count. For league age 14 and under: 1–20 pitches, no rest; 21–35, one day; 36–50, two days; 51–65, three days; 66 or more, four days. League age 15 and 16 get a little more room before each step (1–30, 31–45, 46–60, 61–75, 76+). No one can pitch on three days in a row.

Softball limits innings, not pitches: up to 12 innings a day in the Minor and Major divisions, and a pitcher who throws 7 or more innings needs a day of rest.

Rules first, numbers second. Little League updates its rules and charts each year, and your league may have local rules on top. If anything here differs from what your league tells you, go with your league and the official age page. For arm care beyond the rulebook, see pitch limits for young pitchers and how hard kids throw at each age.

FAQ

How is Little League age worked out for baseball?

A player's league age for baseball is how old they are on August 31 of the season year. For the 2027 season, that's their age on August 31, 2027. A player who turns a year older on August 31 counts as that older age.

How is Little League age worked out for softball?

For softball it's the player's age on December 31 of the year before the season. For 2027, that's their age on December 31, 2026, which means everyone born in the same calendar year has the same softball league age.

Why can my child have a different league age for baseball and softball?

Because the two use different cut-off dates. A girl born in October 2016 is league age 10 for 2027 baseball (she's still 10 on August 31, 2027) and league age 10 for 2027 softball. A girl born in March 2016 is 11 for baseball but 10 for softball.

What league age plays Majors?

Can a 12-year-old play in the Minor League?

Yes, Minor League goes up to league age 12. But under Little League's pitching rules, a league age 12 player can't pitch in the Minor League.

What is the pitch count limit for a 10-year-old in Little League?

75 pitches a day for league age 9 and 10 in regular season baseball. It's 50 for ages 6 to 8, 85 for 11 and 12, and 95 for 13 to 16. Rest days depend on how many pitches they threw.
