How to Choose a Baseball Radar Gun

Skip the “best of” crown until the gun clears a simple gate: does the maker publish an accuracy figure? Then match budget, app needs, range and display to how you’ll actually use it. Specs and prices below come from our product data (checked Oct 24, 2026) and maker pages — no invented test scores.

Not another ranked list. Our Best Baseball Radar Guns page already ranks picks by budget. This page is the decision path: published-spec gate → budget → app → range → team display → used.

Published accuracy first

Before you pick a “winner,” ask one question: does the maker publish an accuracy figure on its own page?

Maker claim (as published) Models in our data
±1 mph Pocket Radar Ball Coach, Smart Coach; Bushnell Velocity (discontinued; from its manual)
±3% of reading Stalker Sport 3 Connect, Stalker Pro 3s
Not published Sports Radar SR3600 (Hitting Store listing); SKLZ Bullet Ball (sensor ball, not radar)
Maker cites an accuracy index; ± tolerance not published JUGS Radar Cube (same “accuracy index” as older JUGS gun; no ± mph on product page)

If there is no published figure, you can still buy for backyard fun — just don’t build tryouts or season goals on that number. More on apps vs real guns: radar gun apps vs radar guns.

App vs no app

Pocket Radar’s Ball Coach and Smart Coach share the same published radar specs (±1 mph, up to 120 ft on a baseball, 25–130 mph, 2-year warranty). The Smart Coach adds Bluetooth and the Pocket Radar app (iOS 15.8+, Android 10+ per the maker).

Get the Ball Coach ($299.99) if you want a number with nothing to pair.

Get the Smart Coach ($399.99) if you’ll use video with speed on it, spoken call-outs, history or CSV export — or a cable-connected Smart Display later ($299.99 at pocketradar.com when we last checked the accessory page; Smart Coach only).

Stalker’s Sport 3 Connect app is described as iOS, with up to 10 devices — useful for a staff that already lives on iPads. Details: Pocket Radar vs Stalker.

Range

Need Published range that fits
Behind the catcher / L-screen on a youth or HS mound Pocket Radar up to 120 ft; Bushnell Velocity up to 90 ft (manual); SR3600 about 60 ft (Hitting Store)
Deeper stands, outfield gunning, or wireless LED sign setups Stalker Sport 3 Connect up to 300 ft; Pro 3s up to 500 ft (spin about 150 ft)

Stand in line with the pitch. Off-angle readings run low (cosine effect). Tip list on the home page.

Team / big display

  • Pocket Radar Smart Display (SD2000): $299.99 accessory; USB cable to Smart Coach only (not Ball Coach). See the Smart Coach model page.
  • Stalker LED speed signs: Sport 3 Connect packages with 2.5-digit or 3.5-digit signs (hard-case packages listed at $1,749.99 and $1,899.99 on stalkersport.com when we read that page). Details: Stalker Sport 3 Connect.
  • JUGS Radar Cube: $360 at jugssports.com; 3-inch LED numbers for a cage or speed-pitch booth — JUGS page.

Buying used

Used makes sense when a discontinued gun (Bushnell Velocity) or an older Stalker still has life, or when you want a current model for less than new. Check condition, ask whether a tuning fork is included, and prefer sellers with returns. Walkthrough: buying a used radar gun.

After you buy: use the number safely

A radar reading tracks one player’s trend — it is not a reason to throw max effort every day.

FAQ

What is the first thing to check when buying a baseball radar gun?

Whether the maker publishes an accuracy figure. Pocket Radar states ±1 mph on the Ball Coach and Smart Coach. Stalker states ±3% of reading on the Sport 3 Connect. If a listing has no published accuracy, treat it as a fun number, not a training tool.

How much should I spend on a baseball radar gun?

Under $100 you mostly get sensor balls or thin-spec hands-free units. A current gun with a published accuracy figure starts at the Pocket Radar Ball Coach ($299.99) or Sports Radar SR3600 ($287.99 at Hitting Store). Team guns with long range and LED signs start at the Stalker Sport 3 Connect ($799.99 radar only).

Do I need an app on my radar gun?

Only if you want video with speed on it, spoken call-outs, history or CSV export. The Smart Coach has those; the Ball Coach does not. Same ±1 mph radar either way — see Smart Coach vs Ball Coach.

How much range do I need?

Pocket Radar lists up to 120 ft on a baseball — enough behind a catcher on a 46 ft or 60 ft 6 in mound. Stalker Sport 3 Connect lists up to 300 ft if you gun from deeper or want a wireless LED sign.

Should I buy a used radar gun?

Sometimes. Used can cut the price of a real gun, especially discontinued models like the Bushnell Velocity. Check seller photos, ask about a tuning-fork test, and read our used radar gun guide before you bid.
